The use of CCTV or closed-circuit television is now a norm among many business establishments. Video footages of crimes being committed are common now in the internet and many business people have seen the practicality of using the system especially in businesses frequented by a lot of people, like convenience stores.

There is no debate that installing security cameras in a place of business has its advantages. Like any device, however, it also has its disadvantages. Let us explore the pros and cons of installing CCTV in your business establishment so that you can see the whole security picture (no pun intended).

Benefits of CCTV

1.            Preempt Wrongdoings. Businesses with installed CCTV often have a sticker or a poster announcing to the public that the establishment has video surveillance equipment. The reason for this is to thwart bad guys from even attempting to rob or invade the property. Knowing that a video evidence of the crime will be captured is enough deterrent.

2.            Insurance Claims. Installing a CCTV surveillance system can lower down the insurance premium being paid by business owners. The savings from insurance payment, in a way, pays for the cost of the equipment. In the event of a crime like burglary or vandalism, a video footage helps in establishing insurance claims.

3.            Solid Evidence for Prosecution. A video evidence is a very reliable proof of wrongdoing should you decide to take legal action. The burden of proof is no longer a “burden” because the tape will show the actual event and there is no way that the chain of events can be twisted. A CCTV system with an audio-recording capability can capture the exchange of words and makes for more solid evidence.

4.            Works in Tandem with Alarm System. Combining CCTV and alarm systems will not only capture the actual crime, but will also provide authorities with warning about the on-going misdeed. The sound of the alarm bells can scare perpetrators away and warn the general public to get out harm’s way.

Downside of CCTV

1.            Actual Crime Prevention. Determined perpetrators will proceed with their criminal misdeeds regardless of the security precaution you put in place. Although the CCTV will capture all their actions, it cannot prevent the crime from actually happening. Criminals will even go to the extent of using masks, hats, or hooded jackets to conceal their identity. Because CCTVs are often installed in ceilings or walls, identifying criminals can be a challenge.

2.            Blind Spots. If your business establishment occupies a lot of floor area, there will be sections which are not covered by the cameras. Unless you have the money to invest, these blind spots become your security loophole.

3.            Promotes Complacency. CCTV can provide a false sense of security to business owners. As such, they miss preventing petty thefts from happening because they rely too much on their security system.

CCTV security system is a great addition to any security measure you want installed in your business premise. You still have to remain alert and vigilant, though, to make sure that crimes are not committed in your business establishment.
